Where to stay in Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City is big, and where you stay shapes every day of your trip. Here's how the main areas compare.
First: addresses have changed
Since July 2025, the city no longer uses districts (quận) in addresses. Everything is now listed by ward (phường). The old District 1, for example, is now split into Sài Gòn, Bến Thành, Tân Định and Cầu Ông Lãnh wards.
Locals, Grab drivers and most hotel listings still say "District 1" and "District 3", though, so this guide uses the old names alongside the new ones.
District 1: the default for a first visit
Ben Thanh Market, Dong Khoi Street, the Nguyen Hue walking street and Notre-Dame Cathedral are all walkable from here. For a first or short trip, it's the easiest choice.
- Around Dong Khoi and Nguyen Hue: upscale hotels, calmer at night.
- Around Ben Thanh Market: the widest price range and easy transport.
- Around Bui Vien Street: the backpacker strip, with music until very late. If you're a light sleeper, stay a block or two away.
District 3: quieter and more local
Right next to District 1, a 5–10 minute Grab from the center. The alleys are full of long-running local restaurants and cafés, and it's noticeably quieter. Several of the city's Michelin Bib Gourmand spots are here.
Thao Dien (former District 2): families and longer stays
The expat neighborhood. Lots of brunch cafés and villa-style places with pools. It's 20–30 minutes to District 1 by Grab, longer at rush hour.
District 7, Phu My Hung: business trips and long stays
A planned new town with wide, clean streets and a large Korean community. More than 30 minutes from the District 1 sights, so it suits business stays more than sightseeing.
District 5, Cholon: Chinatown
The heart of the city's Chinese community, with temples, a herbal medicine market and dim sum. Great for a day of exploring. For a first trip focused on sightseeing, District 1 is a more practical base.
Quick comparison
| Area | Best for | To central District 1 |
|---|---|---|
| District 1 | First visit, short trip | You're there |
| District 3 | Quieter stay, local food | 5–10 min by Grab |
| Thao Dien | Families, long stays | 20–30 min by Grab |
| District 7 | Business trips | 30+ min by Grab |
| District 5 | Chinatown, Chinese food | 15–20 min by Grab |
Booking tips
- "1 minute walk to Bui Vien" often means loud nights. Search reviews for "noise".
- Check whether airport pickup and early luggage drop are available before you book.
