Saigon nightlife guide

Bùi Viện is where most visitors end up on their first night: loud, cheap and packed. If that's not your thing, the city has quieter cocktail bars and a couple of internationally ranked clubs. Both are covered below, along with the rules that actually get tourists in trouble.
Bùi Viện walking street
The basics
- Location: Bùi Viện, Bến Thành (former Phạm Ngũ Lão ward, District 1). The walking section is about 500 m from Đề Thám to Đỗ Quang Đẩu.
- It has been a walking street since 2017.
- Car-free hours: most sources say 7pm–2am on Saturday and Sunday. Others say from Friday, or every night.
- Bars open every evening from around 6pm. Peak is 9pm–midnight, busiest on Fridays and Saturdays.
- 10–15 minutes' walk from Bến Thành Market
Prices
Tuổi Trẻ reported in October 2026 that drinks on the street run 30,000–200,000 VND and food 80,000–200,000 VND. Draught beer on a plastic stool is the cheapest; cocktail prices vary a lot between bars.
- If the menu has no prices, ask before you order.
- Touts sometimes carry their own menu. It may not match the bar's.
- Check the bill line by line before you pay.
Noise
Bars on both sides compete with sound systems, so expect to shout. Since mid-2025 ward police have run regular patrols and bars have signed noise-reduction pledges, according to Tuổi Trẻ.
Laughing gas is illegal
Nitrous oxide balloons ("bóng cười") have been banned in Vietnam since January 1, 2025, and Bùi Viện has been the main enforcement target.
- July 2025: police raided S Pub and arrested the owner for selling balloons.
- August 2025: 90's House was caught selling gas in VIP rooms under coded names on its premium drinks menu.
- A supply ring serving several Bùi Viện bars was broken up, with nine people charged under Article 190 of the Criminal Code (trading in banned goods).
If a bar offers balloons, leave.
Drugs and police checks
When police raid a bar, everyone inside can be drug-tested. In October 2025 a raid on a bar on Đề Thám, next to Bùi Viện, found 62 of 122 people positive.
Australia's Smartraveller notes that in Vietnam having drugs in your system can itself be an offence. Penalties for trafficking go up to life imprisonment or death.
Drink spiking and methanol
The UK, Australian and Canadian travel advisories all warn about drink spiking and methanol-laced spirits in Vietnam, including in licensed bars.
- Watch your drink and don't accept drinks from strangers.
- Stick to beer or sealed bottles at cheap places.
- Blurred vision, confusion or severe nausea after drinking spirits: go to a hospital immediately.
Theft
- Phone snatching from motorbikes happens. Don't walk along the kerb with your phone out.
- Wear your bag across your body, on the side away from the road.
- VnExpress International reported in October 2026 that tourists find the city safer, with more police and fewer snatchers. Still take the basics seriously.
Beyond Bùi Viện
Nguyễn Huệ walking street
- Location: Sài Gòn ward (former District 1), from City Hall down towards the river
- For an evening walk and street performers, not for bars
- Car-free on weekend evenings
- The café apartment building at 42 Nguyễn Huệ is here (see the coffee guide).
Cocktail bars
Two Saigon bars made the 51–100 list of Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026:
- The Enigma Mansion: No. 55, up 38 places from 2025. 5H Tôn Đức Thắng, Sài Gòn ward (former District 1). Open every evening; 50 Best puts the average cocktail at about US$12.
- Stir: No. 85. First floor (one up from street level), 136 Lê Thánh Tôn, Bến Thành (former District 1). Cocktails built on Vietnamese street drinks.
Clubs
Two Saigon clubs are on DJ Mag's Top 100 Clubs 2026:
- APLUS Saigon (No. 59): 492 Võ Văn Kiệt, Cầu Ông Lãnh (former Cầu Kho ward, District 1) . EDM and techno, opened January 2026, sister club of APLUS Hanoi. The official site lists 8pm–4am nightly. VIP tables are booked through aplussaigon.com.vn.
- CINÉ Saigon (No. 68): 148 Cống Quỳnh, Bến Thành (former District 1). Opens nightly from 9pm. It's a short walk from the eastern end of Bùi Viện. Phone +84 90 186 63 36.
Bring ID (a passport copy is fine). Vietnamese law bars under-18s from dance clubs.
Thảo Điền
Thảo Điền (An Khánh ward, former District 2) is where many expats live. It has craft beer bars and pubs and is much calmer than the centre. A Grab from former District 1 costs about 50,000–80,000 VND.
Lê Thánh Tôn and Phú Mỹ Hưng
Karaoke
See the separate karaoke guide.
Getting home
- Book a Grab. Fares are fixed in the app.
- Don't ride a rented motorbike after drinking. Vietnam has no legal alcohol limit for drivers, and since 2025 fines go up to 10 million VND on a motorbike and 40 million VND in a car, with a licence suspension of 22–24 months. Foreigners are fined the same way.
Emergency numbers
Police 113, ambulance 115.
